Mesut Ozil is a German professional footballer who plays as an attacking midfielder for English club Arsenal. He used to play for German National Team as an attacking midfielder before he retired from International football.

Mesut Ozil was born on 15 October 1988 in Gelsenkirchen, Germany. He was the grandson of a Turkish immigrant. He has 3 siblings a brother Mutlu Ozil (manager of Mesut Ozil) and two sisters Dugyu Ozil and Nese Ozil. As a child, he developed his football skills playing alongside his friends in the “Monkey Cage”, a local pitch that was surrounded by fences. After he played for some small football clubs he joined
Gelsenkirchen's FC Schalke 04 in 2005.

How did Mesut Ozil start his Career?

In 2006, Ozil started his football career with the Schalke senior team and the German junior national team. In 2008, despite being talented he was allowed to transfer to SV Werder Bremen. Ozil became popular among his club with his precious ball control and passing style. He helped Weder Bremen to win the 2009 'DFB Cup' and 'DFL Supercup'. During the 2009 U-21 European Championship Ozil debuted for Germany. He scored a goal and provided 2 assists against England winning him the Man of the Match Award. With this remarkable performance, Ozil was selected to the 'FIFA World Cup 2010' squad. He displayed his all-around abilities in the tournament. Ozil scored once and provided several assists and then Germany finished third in the World Cup. He was one of the nominees for tournament’s Golden Ball Award. After the World Cup Ozil moved to Spanish Club Real Madrid in 2010 and played alongside the player like Cristiano Ronaldo. He won 'Copa del Rey' and 'Spanish Super Cup championships' with Real Madrid. In September 2013, Ozil was transferred to English football Club Arsenal and is still playing for Arsenal till today. Ozil won the 'FIFA World Cup 2014' with Germany. He was one of the key players for Germany to win the World Cup.

Mesut Ozil has recently retired from International football games. After he a took a photo with the President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, criticism started. He claimed that the photo was only taken to show respect to the higher Officials and President of his ancestor’s Nation. However, the criticism didn’t stop and Ozil himself said that he felt unwanted and was also poorly treated by DFB, the German Football Association.
