Chmerkovskiy was born on March 24, 1986, in Odessa, Ukrainian SSR, Soviet Union. Currently, he is aged 31. Valentine is the son of Aleksandr "Sasha" Chmerkovskiy and Larisa Chmerkovskiy. His father is Jewish and his mother is Christian. He has one older brother, Maksim Chmerkovskiy, who is also a professional dancer and appears on “Dancing with the Stars”. He did his schooling at The Hudson School.
The family migrated to the US in 1994. In 2001, Valentine and his partner Diana Olonetskaya became the first American dance team to win a world junior championship title at the age of 15.

On February 10, 2006, Chmerkovskiy first appeared on season 2 of “Dance with the Stars” as a student of his brother during Week 6. His partner was Valeriya Kozharinova and ended up performing two numbers.
Chmerkovskiy appeared on various seasons of “Dance with the Stars” but didn’t end up well. In season 15, Chmerkovskiy danced as a professional partner and they finished in third place on the season finale. For season 16, Chmerkovskiy was partnered with Disney Channel's Shake It Up star, Zendaya ending finale in second place.
