Singer-songwriter Rod Stewart was born Roderick David Stewart on 10 January 1945 in London, England. Born into a working-class family, Stewart excelled in soccer. He worked a series of strange jobs, including working as a serious digger, before his singing career began. In the 1960s, Stewart was part of several different bands. In 1966, he joined the blues-influenced Jeff Beck Group and experienced his first success. The band toured the United Kingdom and the United States and released two hit albums. In 1969, he joined what was known as the Faces. Ron Wood was one of his bandmates and became a Rolling Stones member.

His introduction to rock and roll was to listen to Little Richard's 1956 hit The Girl Can't Help It and to watch Bill Haley & His Comets in concert. In January 1959, his father bought him a guitar, his first song to learn was a folk song, It Takes a Worried Man to Sing a Worried Song. He then bought Eddie Cochran's first record C' mon Everybody. In 1960, he joined a skiffle group with his school friends and played Lonnie Donegan and Chas McDevitt's hits. In the late 1960s and early 1970s, he became famous with The Jeff Beck Group, and then with Faces. His musical career began in 1962, after searching for a harmonica.

As a harmonica player, he joined the Dimensions and part-time vocalist in October 1963. In 1964, he joined Long John Baldry and the All Stars, signed a solo contract the same year and released his first single, Good Morning Little Schoolgirl, in October. He continued his solo career with a group career, then released his debut solo album, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down in 1969. His early albums were a fusion of rock, soul, folk music and R&B. He is one of the best-selling music artists of all time and has sold over 100 million records worldwide. He has had six successively number one albums in the UK and a tally of 62 UK hit singles, 31 of which reached the top ten, six of which took the #1 position. He has 16 top ten singles in the US, four of which reached #1 on the Billboard Hot 100. He was knighted in the 2016 Birthday Honors for music and charity services.
